Big Yummy: A Playful Typeface for Modern Editorial Design

I was recently tasked with redesigning the header for a lifestyle blog that focused on wellness, travel, and creative living. The previous font felt too formal, and the new direction needed something more inviting, something that would make readers pause and smile before diving into the content. That’s when I discovered Big Yummy, a display font with just the right balance of boldness and cuteness to match the blog’s evolving tone.

Big Yummy is a handcrafted display typeface that brings warmth and whimsy to any editorial project. Its curves are soft but confident, and its character shapes feel like they were drawn with care rather than generated by an algorithm. It has a rhythm that feels natural—like reading a handwritten note from a friend who’s excited to share their latest adventure.

From Blog Headers to Ebook Covers

One of the first places I used Big Yummy was in the blog’s main header. The previous sans-serif font had been clean and modern, but it lacked personality. When I swapped it out for Big Yummy, the entire look transformed. It felt more approachable, more human. Readers responded positively, commenting that the new design made them feel more connected to the content.

Big Yummy also worked beautifully as a title font for a recipe ebook I was designing. Each chapter opener featured the font in a different color or size, creating visual interest without overwhelming the reader. For pull quotes, I used a lighter weight version to keep the text readable while still maintaining the playful spirit of the font.

For a wedding guide I was working on, I paired Big Yummy with a clean serif font for body copy. This combination created a nice contrast between the decorative and the traditional, making the content feel both elegant and fun. The font’s versatility allowed it to shine in section headings, event listings, and even as a decorative accent on page borders.

Readability and Practicality in Real Use Cases

While Big Yummy is undoubtedly a display font, it’s not without its practical side. It performs well on screen, especially at larger sizes, and holds up nicely in PDF exports. For print materials, I found that it worked best when used sparingly—especially in longer blocks of text where legibility could become an issue.

When designing a printable planner, I used Big Yummy for section headers and dates. It added a friendly touch that matched the planner’s overall aesthetic. I also experimented with using it in smaller doses for icons and decorative elements, which helped create a cohesive visual language across the design.

For mobile layouts, I made sure to test how the font rendered on various screen sizes. While it looked great on desktop, I kept it to titles and subtitles on mobile to avoid any potential issues with small text readability.

Font Pairing and Editorial Consistency

One of the most important aspects of using a display font like Big Yummy is knowing how to pair it effectively with other fonts. In the lifestyle blog redesign, I paired it with a modern sans-serif font for navigation menus and captions. This helped maintain a clear visual hierarchy while keeping the overall design consistent.

For a digital magazine layout, I used Big Yummy for headlines and paired it with a classic serif font for body text. This combination gave the publication a professional yet approachable feel, which aligned perfectly with its target audience.

In another project, a coaching workbook, I used Big Yummy for chapter titles and motivational quotes. To ensure readability, I paired it with a clean sans-serif font for exercises and instructions. This helped maintain focus on the content while still allowing the font to add personality to the design.

Considering Licensing and File Formats

Before finalizing any project that uses Big Yummy, I always check the licensing terms. Since it’s a commercial font, it’s essential to confirm whether it can be used in ebooks, templates, printables, or client projects. I also review the available file formats—whether it includes OTF, TTF, or WOFF—to ensure compatibility with web and print outputs.

Checking for multilingual support is another step I take when using any font for international projects. Big Yummy appears to cover a wide range of characters, which makes it suitable for use in diverse editorial contexts.

Lastly, I always look for alternates, ligatures, and weights. These features can greatly enhance the visual appeal of a design, especially when used creatively in headlines or decorative elements.

Big Yummy isn’t just a font—it’s a tool that helps shape the mood, identity, and engagement of a publication. Whether you’re working on a blog, ebook, newsletter, or printable guide, this display font offers a unique way to bring personality and charm to your editorial designs. And when used thoughtfully, it can help create a reading experience that feels both beautiful and meaningful.
